Actually nurses have the H1c visa, but there are only 500 a year and only 14 hospitals in the whole country can apply for these visas. These visas last 3 years and after that the nurse has to leave the country. Not that employers don't want to apply for visas, it is just that many nursing positions DO NOT qualify for H1B! So the only viable option is the GC

I think sending out emails to everyone wont serve the purpose. It will become more of a Spam from IV, which won't help in any way.

Also, all the state chapter leaders have been asked to sent out emails to their respective state chapters. So, people will be knowing about this campaign.

You can change the assumption of the calculations. 750,000 are anticipated number of applicants. Now, even if u reduce it by half, i.e. 375,000, the wait could be more than a year long.
Plus we do not know if there are 10 or 100 people working on EAD stuff. Lower this number , longer would be the wait.

A small but important correction in the above quote. Indian education is not a gift of the Brits. As a matter of fact history of eduction in India dates back to its cultural heritage. Nalanda university is considered to be the worlds first university. Correct me if I am wrong.

To be fair - India definitely has a competitive K-12 system because they are not all public schools (for free) like here. So the people who do get into IITs and RECs already have an edge.
Having said that - the Indian college education like Gayatri said is not as rigorous as it is here (and I am NOT talking about the IITs).
People pay a lot to go to college in the US and hence are generally more serious about their education. Fact is, a plumber can also make a good living here without a college degree. Its only those who can pay and are interested go to college. Ethical issues like copyright/plagiarism are also taken more seriously here and students are trained in critical thinking.
In all I think both nations have good and bad. I have to READ Wadhwa's report to understand what he is trying to convey. All I heard was 'apples and oranges and pineapples' from his talk.

Please file for SSNs quoting this stimulus package and get the refund. If someone tries and SSA refuses, we can take it up with legislators or even pursue litigation.
I am the person who originally compiled the information. I am in the process of appealing the first SSA denial and I am in touch with my local congresswoman about this. If you want to get involved, please let me know. Also, I recommend that everyone contacts his or her congressman/congresswoman even if you are not directly affected. Most legislators are not even aware of how this rule affects people. We need to stop groups like FAIR from pushing through more legislation that discriminates against immigrants.
Finally, if the SSA denies my appeal, I am planning to file with the federal appeals court. Any ideas on how to go about this are appreciated.

The USCIS automated line for Priority dates is still playing the PD's for June 2007 showing that EB-3 India cut off June 1st 2003 etc..
We have so contrasting images of the efficiency of USCIS. Hope they keep the same tempo as of the last week of June on Oct 1st when the FY 2008 quota kicks in.

I think there are many ways to look at it. Doing Free service , yes it is a form of Gandhigiri, but will that cause the lawmakers to recognize us and pass laws in favor o fus..I do not think so.
I think our situation is no different than people in South Africa in Gandhian times. How Gandhi fought for them is by writing and writing and pestering the Authorities to reduce unfair taxes on Indians in SA and to solve other problems they had like cannot ride in the same Trains/cars as Whites etc...., fighting for their rights in a Vocal but Non Voilent - non aggressive approach.
We, in this post , have equated Gandhigiri with - divide ur attention - Go Do MBA- be occupied with something else while u are retrogressed, furthur ur career/skills,,,etc I do not think that is what Gandhigiri is about i.e. doing something for the self, but instead do it for the community. In this case IV is our community and its leaders are doing the right thing for our cause and if we continue to support that by adding members, funds we will do a fair bit of gandhigiri towards our cause.

I hope in the visa statistics for the year 2008 they don't come up with a report saying that 20,000 visas were lost as they were unused :D.

I have been intending to post this for a while: I still have major doubts on the predictions made by DOS. We all are grateful to them to at least do an effort to provide such predictions, but things don't add up.
It is everyone's understanding that these predictions are based on the information about "preadjudicated applications" from USCIS. Now if you look at the total number of preadjudicated applications from what USCIS has published, it seems that PD (for EB2 India) will move to at least to 2007 if not 2008 by the end of fiscal year 2010. There are no new 485 filings (except for EB1 and EB2 ROW) and unless there is a "HUGE" increase in these categories, there is no other way to explain the basis for these predictions.
Someone else mentioned in this thread about the large number of filings in 2005 due to PERM, but remember, this should already be accounted for in USCIS's preadjudicated numbers.
So either these DOS predictions are some form of scare technique, or too much conservative estimate (so as not to disappoint people) or there is a missing piece of information that we have no clue about.
In any case, I do not claim to be a "better predictor" than DOS; but reality is that all these are pedictions and we have to wait till July-Sept 2010 to find out the truth.
Hoping for the best....:)
